They're still going

Two days after scoring his empty net goal in Detroit, Edmonton Oiler Jarret Stoll is seen celebrating another one, and maybe the biggest one of his career. It came in the third game of a best of seven series against the National Hockey League's top team in 2006, or so we thought. That goal may have been the turning point in the most amazing playoff run ever. Almost two months later, Stoll and company are in the finals.

It wasn't looking good Wednesday night, however. Up 3 games to 1, Carolina only needed one more victory to win the cup. The Oilers' luck appeared to have run out - especially when the game ended in a tie and they had one man in the penalty box three minutes into overtime. Enter Fernando, the kid who grew up in Edmonton, doing what no man had ever done before, scoring the first ever overtime shorthanded goal in Stanley Cup history. His team? They're still going.

Going, going gone! Whatever are the flickers going to do with all their free time? And thank you Jesus that we don't have to listen to the morning after radio show. How desperate was that!?!

What free time? Even though I'm not a basketball fan, I caught a bit of that final NBA game last night. Don't know much about the teams in the World Cup either, but there are three to watch every day. More on that later.

I agree that Mike Richards of The Fan 960 fame crossed the line with his "The Oilers are Dead" story, impersonating a rowdy TV evangelist, using all the cliches that many true believers really don't appreciate all that much anymore. Actually, while the impersonation was quite accurate, I felt he was bordering on blasphemy with some of his comments about salvation and the blood of Jesus. No doubt he's been reprimanded and now regrets it. I believe some of his colleagues also find his pro Carolina rantings a bit much, since they've discovered he was really serious. But he's definitely stirred up the Battle of Alberta embers to a nice glow. He may not realize that blue is actually hotter than red. He is very funny, I'll give him that, so I for one will keep listening. And, inspite of what some might think, it doesn't really interfere with your marriage. He comes on at 6 a.m. when our significant others are fast asleep. If not, you can always use the headphones.
